Cygnus Knights! Time to Kick that Old 12X to the Curb!

As I'm sure all of my Maple Story readers know, Cygnus Knights were recently introduced into the game. Knowing the fanatic enthusiasm of most Maplers, I don't think I really need to go into too much depth in terms of their particular abilities past the fact that there are five new classes, the Dawn Warrior, Blaze Wizard, Wind Archer, Night Walker, and Thunder Breaker. They are tied to the concept of warrior, magician, bowman, thief, and pirate, respectively. Cygnus Knights are characters that are being recruited by Empress Cygnus (who is, as per Maple Story's Modus Operandi, is an adorable blonde, helpless looking female charcter) to fight the Black Mage (or Black "Magician", as some other Nexon resources call it) who has suddenly awoken for an unexplained reason and threatens existence. (You know, the standard stuff.)

That's the plot. In a paragraph, that's exactly what the "New" Maple Story is going to be about.

It seems to me that Nexon cooked up a whole new game, one with a real plot and some semi-deep characters, and designed it and introduced it into their 'old' game as a method of keeping their previous fan base.

I mean, from what I've read, Cygnus Knight characters will have access to quests, abilities, and stories that normal mainstream characters won't. That is, Knights will be able to make completely new items and, I assume, wield new weapons to fight a new enemy that's bearing down on a new Princess/Queen/Fairy/ClichedDamselinNeedOfHelp. Old characters'll have to sit back and watch. I'd also like to point out that, of course, the Cygnus Knights will be able to go everywhere, and do everything any regular character could. So, to sum it up: the Knights will be able to do everything in the game and play through a story (Maple with a story? Insanity, I know), while non knighted characters get left out of the party.

What is Nexon implying to all its players in making this update? "If you want to keep enjoying our prime content, you have to make a whole new character!"

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist nutter here, but it seems like another way to keep old veteran players completely caught up in the game. Got a level 200 Night Lord? Spent (literally) a thousand or so hours leveling and upgrading? Well, now you have to leave it behind and start from the beginning!

And what does "Start from the beginning" really mean? "You'll have spend even more hours grinding away with a new set of skills and abilities to gain level after level, purchase Nexon Point Cards to buy 2x EXP cards, and buy even more NX cards to get cool new weapon and armor masks (which most of you will) so you can look awesome!"

[Break out your wallets!]

I'm having a hard time correctly articulating how much this would frustrate me if I was a heavily involved player. Do any of you actually feel a little cheated by this? I really hope you do. But hey, If you don't? More power to you. If you like that sort of thing, starting anew and working your way back up the level pyramid again, this is right up your alley. Enjoy it!

Sadly, this isn't new improvement.

The Cygnus Knights are more of the same from the originals. This still hasn't changed the gameplay since it's still remainly rooted when this game started.

And everyone can obtain to level 120 in a day.

Frew's picture

Well, define "improvement",

Well, define "improvement", would you? In terms of game play, it's just another grind. But that's all MapleStory is capable of releasing. The entire system is completely simplified to a point where are all you can do is kill monsters. Quest? Go kill monsters. Items? Go kill monsters. Money? Go kill monsters. If you want gameplay with diversity, go play Runescape or Warcraft.

If you're referring to an "improvement" in terms of character upgrade system, the Knights are stronger faster. They get fourth job skills at the third job advancement.

Cygnus isn't as "free-willed"

There's a few certain quests and a whole map that isn't exactly available to Cygnus Knights. By quests I mean the ones that are set by job, like Featherweights in New Leaf City. KoC players are unable to obtain the Nocturnal staff, the diamond bows/xbows, or the the thief hat equips, as they're set for the 5 Adventurers. Also Ellin Forest is available to KoC's, but the quests, and Ellin PQ is unavailable to them.

Although, I agree with your point of the release of Cygnus just as a release to keep it's veteran players. Which in return will cause those players to spend money again leveling and upgrading their newly profound character.

The real meaning of KOC

KOC is meant to buff your characters. Did anyone think of that? U can reach 120 in like a week of normal training. If ur fast 2 days most.

ZarchBladeZX's picture

KOS are meant to improve your normal character. I think

they raise the WA and MA of your character by one for every 10 lvls they lvl

devidinio's picture

Seriously,, how would you

Seriously,, how would you ever be able to reach 120 in a week? left alone in 2 days O_o Without leeching that is

00000

If you think about it, what you basically do in Runescape is level up.

The knights

The knights r all well and good but in the end they r a bit stupid, when u get to the next job addvancement u do not get to pick what things u want to be able to do so for example the pirate (striker) does not get pick to be a gunslinger which i have been looking forward to for some time but am yet to have recevd the privolige to play as.

00000

It's not really that stupid. If it had another choice of 2nd job, then the jobs wouldn't make so much sense. Another reason, they were too lazy to make them.

Sigh....

Why so much speculation on the Knights?

The knights just have new names to make the jobs sound cool. So the newbies on Maple will create a knight and not just a "boring old adventurer".
Like if this newbie just joined and thought.....wow, a Thunder Breaker sounds so much better than just a boring old Pirate/Gunslinger/Captain/Marauder/Infighter, then they would create, and then they would get another knight.
What I'm trying to say is, Maple may be trying to erase out the Adventurers once they get a whole bunch of Knights.

Mouse1093's picture

the knights are better than people are cutting them out to be

the KoC arent just remakes and arent a tactic to "erase out the adventures". the KoC get new skills that are specialized to their elements and are exceptionally strong. Yes these knights are going to have an advantage over regular adventurers until lvl 120. KoC recieve 6 AP per lvl rather than 5 like an adventurer. At lvl 70 this reverts back to normal with 5 AP. after doing the math KoC at lvl 70-120 will have a 14 lvl advantage over their adventurer counterparts (assuming exactly the same equips items and skill lvls). The point is so players can have that rush of making huge progress in a short amount of time where as the more dedicated players that prefer adventurers still get to dominate once they reach lvl 135 when they will over come the KoC advantage. There are things that adventurers can do that KoC will never accomplish

Korean Maple

They have had Cygnus in Korea for a while and started Aran already, They didn't erase the adventurers yet. I don't think we'll be in danger of losing adventurers for 10-20 years. Chill.

Knights are just a side quest basically

Sure sure, you have to restart the game all over with your Cygnus, but really, it's all about the added crap you get with your main character. Of course, "all the crap" entitles to only 1 weapon attack upgrade per ten levels of your cygnus. It's not so good, but it's enough to make super hardcore Maplers who have the max possible weapon attack on their trusty... weapon and get even more. It's all good fun. It's the same Maple, they just added something new to keep us old timers from getting bored with maxing out all of our characters fifty times over and getting the same results. Or it's just new. :)

i hate koc(knights of cygnus)

i dont like it ):

ggyourface's picture

koc?

i tried koc before and got to lvl 16
u hav to do random quests which are just killing monsters and getting their 'dolls'. in teh end, u get exp and thats it.
i only got 1000exp so far for me doing those quests. -_-"
i wont force u too not play koc
but for me,
its very boring!
you also cant do some of the quests such as maker and the Elin PQ
which gives u pretty good exp.

SMXfck's picture

koc owns

knight of cygnus for people who think they never wil reach lv 200

roadworks's picture

o-o

The thing is, if you do have a level 200 Night Lord, there won't be much to do on it other than own up monsters right? Pretty pointless. So of course you'd make another character, why not make in a KoC? Also, stop calling them Knights! Imagine all the speculation the real Knights have to go through, like they're some sort of... Snail-like creature.

StruckByRain's picture

Well, it depends....

It all depends on how you look at this situation. If you want to start over and use these new skills, then by all means go ahead. But I could never get to level 70. I have more fun on my 100 priest....
Anyways, I think MapleStory would have a better shot at keeping members by creating an entire story-line for it's self. Yes I know they say "It's your story.", but giving us EVERYTHING to do isn't fun. Why couldn't they make up a story like a strange magician was wondering around and our GM's decided to see what was up. So we went up to him and asked who he was and where he was from. He replies, "I am from a dream, a dream of the queen; Here to conquer this "world"."
A story line like that would be a great way to introduce a new job class. Rather than just having it pop out of nowhere. =)

if u hate koc dun come complain over here keep ur personal matters to your self no one needs to know u like it or hate it even if this is a comment area

no maker if ur a knight......WRONG!!!

i'm a maker. a level 52 wind archer cygnus knight.

NightWing9k's picture

Koc is an ADD-ON

the KoC are add-ons, so as to make some diversity... can you picture ONLY archers,warriors,mages,etc... could you? Nexon and Wizet are trying to create diversity within the character-types... and thats what tha Aran's are for... I wonder why no-one else has thought of this

btw, i have a KoC, and their skills arent bad at all really....

kittykat200's picture

KoC

KoCs were just fer nexon to get a boost in their player numbers. Thats what maplestory runs on anyway. really, theyre not better than adventurers, its pretty even anyway.
I dont have a KoC but their skills are pretty good, just less base damage but more ap.
